**Set up of double sided closed wraps:
Find the top center of the rod blank and mark it.

Starting at the mark wrap a piece of masking tape around the blank near the handle. Mark the tape where it meets itself. Take it off, cut it at the mark, fold it in half, and mark it where the fold is, and measure it (this is the circumference of the blank at the handle or measurement "A1"). Example: 29 mm
Put the piece of tape back on the blank. Mark the blank where the fold in the tape is or 90 degrees from the original mark.

The final length of the wrap depends on many factors. Personal taste, guide placement, handle length, etc. I typically follow this guideline: circumference at handle:final length - 30 mm or less:150 mm, 35 mm:155 mm, 40 mm:160 mm, 45 mm:165 mm, 50 mm:170 mm, 55 mm:175 mm, 60 mm or more:180 mm. Example: 150 mm

Using Clemens' Improved Butt Wrap Alignment Tool, a similar device, or to the best of your ability, draw a perfectly straight line down the blank at each of the marks. The lines should be approximately 1.3 times the desired final length of the wrap. This length is measurement "D". Example: 195 mm

Measure the circumference of the blank at the end of the lines using another piece of masking tape. This will be measurement "B1". Example: 25 mm

Multiply measurements A1 and B1 by a compression or expansion percentage (for most wraps I prefer a compression of 50 - 55%). These will be measurements "A" and B". I typically find a percentage that creates numbers as close to whole numbers as possible. If no compression is desired then A = A1 and B = B1. Example: 52% yields measurements of approximately 15 mm (A1) and 13 mm (A2).

Find the average of measurements A1 and A2. This is measurement "C". Example: 14 mm

Divide measurement D by measurement C. This number (+1) represents the number of "tick marks" that will be drawn perpendicular to the lines already drawn on the blank. These ticks marks will be where the initial threads cross. Example: 15 tick marks or 14 spaces

On a piece of paper draw the tick marks. Write measurement B in the first (or right) space, measurement A in the last (or left) space, and measurement C in the center space (or both center spaces if there are an even number of spaces).

Using easy fractions (.25, .5, .75) put numbers in the rest of the spaces (evenly - repeating numbers if necessary). Example: |13|13|13.25|13.5|13.5|13.75|14|14|14.25|14.5|14.5|14.75|15|15|

Now add up the numbers and put the sums in the spaces. Example: |13|26|39.25|52.75|66.25|80|94|108|122.25|136.75|151.25|166|181|196|

These numbers represent where the tick marks on the top of the blank will go. On the bottom of the blank make tick marks exactly in the center of the tick marks on the top of the rod.

How I accomplish the last two steps above is to put a piece of masking tape on the Butt Wrap Alignment tool and re-draw the tick marks (at the appropriate measurements). Then I use this "ruler" to draw the tick marks on the top of the blank. Then I rotate the rod 90 degrees and draw the bottom tick marks in between the marks on the masking tape.

Notes:

Marks directly on the blank can be made using pencil. On large graphite blanks with a shiny finish a razor knife could be used to make a slight mark in the finish. Be careful to not cut into the blank itself and remember that you will not be able to erase the cut so do not make it longer than your desired final size of the wrap. Matte type finishes work the best with pencil - it shows up very well and is easily erased.

For wraps that require the first cross wrap to be off center (such as some fish wraps). Draw two more lines offset from the center of the original two lines. The distance depends on the type of wrap. Then draw the tick marks on those new lines. Save the original lines so that you know where the top center and bottom center of the blank is.

The reason the wrap is made 1.3 times longer than needed is to allow for mistakes toward the end of the wrap that can be cut off when finished with butt wrap.
